What Stackboard
doesn’t do.

The short version

Stackboard is a new-tab Chrome extension that stores your bookmarks as native Chrome bookmarks on your own device. The extension does not collect personal information, does not transmit any data off your device, does not use analytics, does not use remote code, and has no backend server.

What data the extension touches

  • Bookmarks— stored locally in Chrome’s native bookmarks store under Other bookmarks → Stackboard. Chrome syncs these across your own devices via your Google account (the same way it syncs every other bookmark). They never reach a Stackboard server because there is no Stackboard server.
  • Favicons — fetched through Chrome’s built-in _favicon/ mechanism to render icons next to each bookmark. No favicon URL or page URL is transmitted anywhere by the extension.
  • Open tabs— the extension reads the addresses of the tabs you have open, on your device, to put a dot on bookmarks that are already open and to switch to that tab when you click one. The toolbar button reads the current tab’s title and address when you save it. Tab addresses are never stored or sent anywhere.
  • Small local caches — the extension stores the bookmark-folder id of its root folder under chrome.storage.localso it doesn’t have to rescan the bookmark tree on every new tab open, and the new-tab page remembers which Space you had open and whether the sidebar is collapsed. These values never leave your device.

Permissions the extension requests, and why

  • bookmarks — the storage backend. All Spaces, Stacks, and bookmarks the user creates live as Chrome bookmarks.
  • favicon — to display a favicon next to each bookmark card.
  • tabs— to open bookmarks as new tabs when the user clicks “Open tabs”, to show which bookmarks are already open and switch to them, and to save the current tab from the toolbar button.
  • tabGroups — to group the freshly opened tabs into a single tab group named after the current Space.
  • storage — to cache the root folder id under chrome.storage.local.

Data sharing

None. The extension does not contact any server. No data is sold, transferred, or shared with any third party. No advertising. No telemetry. No crash reporting. No analytics SDK.

Children

Stackboard is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any data, from anyone, of any age.

Changes to this policy

If anything material about how the extension handles data changes, the Effective date at the top of this page will change and the new policy will be live at this same URL. Because the extension does not collect contact info, there is no notification channel beyond this page.
